Fifteen CPM questions, answered straight

By Oliver Wakefield-Smith · updated July 2026

The short answer

The questions people actually ask about CPM, answered in 40 to 60 words each, no throat-clearing. Every answer links to the page that carries the depth, and no answer contains a figure that is missing from the source ledger.

What does CPM mean in advertising?

CPM is cost per mille: the price of 1,000 ad impressions. Mille is Latin for thousand. It prices exposure rather than clicks or sales, and it is computed as spend divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000.

The full definition

How do I calculate CPM?

Divide spend by impressions and multiply by 1,000. Example: $500 across 40,000 impressions is a $12.50 CPM. Rearranged, spend divided by CPM times 1,000 gives impressions, and CPM times impressions over 1,000 gives budget.

The formula page

What is a good CPM?

Good means at or below your channel's median for your region and objective. Sourced July 2026 medians: Meta $13.48 global (Gupta Media), Instagram $8.96, LinkedIn $33.80 (TheB2BHouse), podcast host-reads $18 to $25 (AdvertiseCast).

Verdicts by channel

Why is my CPM so high?

Usually one of nine causes: narrow audience, auction competition, frequency saturation, Q4 seasonality, creative fatigue, learning phase, restricted placements, audience overlap or quality penalties. Each has a metric that exposes it; check before changing anything.

The diagnostic list

How many impressions does $1,000 buy?

Budget divided by CPM, times 1,000. At Meta's $13.48 tracker average, $1,000 buys about 74,184 impressions; at LinkedIn's $33.80 aggregate, about 29,586. Any other pair solves the same way.

The worked scenario

Is CPM what I pay or what I earn?

CPM is paid by advertisers. Creators and publishers earn RPM, revenue per 1,000 views, which runs lower because the platform keeps its share and not every view carries an ad. YouTube publishes the split: creators keep 55% of watch-page ad revenue.

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille. Mille is Latin for thousand, a habit inherited from print rate cards that sold audiences by the thousand. Some markets write CPT, cost per thousand, for the identical metric.

The etymology

What is the difference between CPM and eCPM?

CPM is a contracted price for impressions. eCPM is measured: total earnings divided by total impressions, times 1,000, whatever pricing models produced the money. They diverge through mixed pricing, unfilled impressions and count discrepancies.

Why reports disagree

What is the difference between CPM and CPC?

CPM buys impressions; CPC buys clicks. Which is cheaper is a click-through-rate crossover: effective CPC equals CPM divided by clicks per thousand. Above the break-even CTR, impression buying wins; below it, pay per click and let the platform carry the risk.

The crossover math

What is a good CPM on Facebook?

Benchmark against Gupta Media's tracker: $13.48 global average and about $23 for US-targeted campaigns, retrieved July 2026. At or below the relevant figure is good; above it, diagnose audience, season and creative before assuming a problem.

Facebook in depth

What is a typical podcast CPM?

AdvertiseCast's published marketplace averages: $18 per 1,000 downloads for a 30-second host-read, $25 for a 60-second, retrieved July 2026. Billing counts IAB-filtered downloads, not confirmed listens, so compare against other channels with care.

Podcast rates

Does YouTube publish CPM rates?

No. YouTube's former pricing pages are gone and buying runs through the Google Ads auction with no published rates. What is published: billing rules per format, including the 30-second view charge for skippable CPV ads, and the creator revenue split.

What is documented

Why is my CPM high but my results fine?

Conversion-optimized campaigns deliberately buy scarcer, likelier-to-convert impressions, so a higher CPM with a lower cost per result is the system working. Judge campaigns on cost per result; CPM is an input price, not a scoreboard.

The funnel cascade

Do lower CPMs mean better advertising?

No. The auction sells cheap impressions that are cheap because nobody else wants them. Lowering CPM helps only when the impressions stay relevant; broadening audiences and refreshing creative are the levers that cut price without gutting quality.
